Qatar has expressed its aspiration that the Civil Society Forum of the 5th UN Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5) will represent an important opportunity to establish new partnerships, explore innovative and implementable solutions to key implementation areas of the Doha Programme of Action (DPoA) and allowing civil society organizations to develop plans and strategies that contribute to supporting the DPoA implementation.
This came in the speech of HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi on Saturday at the high-level opening of the Civil Society Forum. He said that such events, including the Civil Society Forum, which began Saturday and continues in the coming days, and its various panel discussions, represent an important and unique forum not only for discussion but also for announcing initiatives, innovative partnerships, and targeted measures to support the least developed countries (LDCs) in implementing an ambitious program of action — DPoA for 2022-2031.
He explained that the unanimous adoption of DPoA was an important step forward, which clearly demonstrated the priority given to LDCs issues and their advanced position on the global agenda. He stressed that LDC5, which starts Sunday, would complete the positive momentum and emphasize the international community's commitment and the urgent need for concerted efforts and co-operation based on multilateralism and partnerships to support the LDCs efforts and endeavours to implement DPoA, which defines their aspirations and priorities.
He pointed out that Qatar has for years been, and still is, one of the countries at the forefront of supporting the aspirations and efforts of LDCs in their path toward sustainable and comprehensive development.
He added that Qatar's hosting of the LDC5 is clear evidence of Qatar's commitment to supporting the endeavours of LDCs and also reflects the political will of Doha to always be a platform for solidarity and multilateral action. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs said that amid the concerns and challenges facing millions of people in the LDCs, the DPoA constitutes a very important road map, particularly its new generation of global partnerships based on renewing and strengthening the commitments of LDCs and their development partners and all other stakeholders to achieve recovery from the pandemic, build resilience, and accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
He welcomed the encouragement of the DPoA for civil society and other concerned parties to contribute to the implementation of the work program in the relevant areas of competence, in line with the national priorities of the LDCs and in cooperation with the relevant national government institutions. He stressed that ensuring this comprehensive participatory process for all stakeholders in the LDCs will be an important catalyst for the successful implementation of the DPoA.
He wished that the work of the Civil Society Forum would be crowned with success and fruitful discussions, extending sincere thanks and appreciation to all parties involved in organizing the work of this important forum.
