Qatar has affirmed its keenness to promote and protect human rights in Sudan, and its firm stance towards its stability, unity and territorial integrity, and renewed its support for the brotherly Sudanese people to achieve their legitimate aspirations for freedom, peace and justice.
This came in a statement by HE the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN in Geneva Dr Hind Abdul Rahman al-Muftah, during her participation in the interactive dialogue on the update of the High Commissioner for Human Rights on Sudan, within the framework of the 52nd session of the UN Human Rights Council.
She said that while Qatar commends the co-operation of the Government of Sudan with the office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Khartoum, and with the Human Rights Council, including receiving the High Commissioner and the appointed expert on Sudan, and facilitating their recent visits to the country, Qatar stresses the importance of investing in this co-operation by providing more necessary technical support to build and strengthen human rights capacities in Sudan. This should take into account the main priorities of the Sudan government, and its desires, needs and commitments, in the delicate circumstance that the country is going through, and stressed the importance of co-ordination between the concerned United Nations human rights mechanisms in Sudan. The aim should be on optimal use of the resources available to these mechanisms, and preventing conflicts and duplication of their competencies, in supporting Sudan's efforts to achieve the required progress for the promotion and protection of human rights.
She expressed Qatar's appreciation of the efforts made within the framework of the ongoing political process in Sudan, as a pivotal and important step to end the political crisis in the country, and its aspiration for the continuation of dialogue between the Sudanese parties in order to reach a comprehensive final agreement that represents all segments of the Sudanese people, and establishing a transitional phase that paves the way for stability, development and peace.
