Spanish duo Jeronimo Gonzalez and Alejandro Ruiz yesterday upset top seeds Alejandro Galan and Juan Lebron in straight sets to reach the semi-final of the Ooredoo Qatar Major 2023.
In a thrilling quarter-final battle at the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex, Gonzalez and Ruiz exhibited great understanding to carve out a 6-4, 7-6 (2) in 91 minutes against their compatriots from Spain.
By virtue of yesterday’s shock result, the popular duo of Galan and Lebron will not be able to meet second seeds and arch-rivals Franco Stupackzuk and Martin Di Nenno, both from Argentina, in the final. Stupackzuk and Di Nenno yesterday beat sixth seeds Spain’s Javier Garrido and Argentina’s Federico Chingotto 7-5 (2), 6-4 in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
In the third quarter-finals, fifth seeds Arturo Coello (Spain) and Agustin Tapia (Argentina) beat ninth seeds Maximiliano Sanchez of Argentina and Lucas Campognolo of Brazil 6-4, 6-3 in 82 minutes.
The world’s premier 64 players are battling for top honours at the six-day tournament being hosted by Qatar Tennis, Squash, Badminton and Padel Federation. The hugely popular tournament ends tomorrow.
