UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed the international organisation's support for institutions in Iraq, expressing his confidence that Iraqis will be able to overcome the difficulties and challenges they face.
"I want to, once again, express my deep solidarity with the Iraqi people and my hope that Iraq will face a future of peace and prosperity and with consolidated democratic institutions," Guterres said in a joint press conference held earlier on Wednesday with Foreign Minister of Iraq Fuad Hussein.
In turn, the Iraqi Foreign Minister said that his country is looking forward to the proposals of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on the situation in the region.
He referred to extensive meetings and discussions with the Secretary-General about the developments of the political situation in Iraq and the situation in the region and the world, adding that there are great national, regional, and global challenges and that they need to exchange views and look forward to supporting the Secretary-General in facing these challenges, and to hear his thoughts, especially on the regional situation and security.
The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived Tuesday in Iraq at the head of a UN delegation to hold talks with Iraqi officials to strengthen the international organisation's political, humanitarian, and security role in Iraq.
During his visit to Iraq, Guterres will discuss files related to climate issues, health issues, water crisis, political files related to the political and security situation in Iraq, and government preparations for holding elections during the next stage, in addition to the file of the displaced.
This is the second visit of the UN Secretary-General to Iraq after his first visit in 2017 when he discussed the humanitarian situation and international relief efforts in Iraq.
