At least 26 people were killed and more than 85 injured when a passenger train carrying more than 350 people collided with a freight train in Tempi, central Greece, near the city of Larissa, the Greek Fire Service said.
Visual media showed footage of train cars that derailed and were severely damaged, with thick columns of smoke rising in the air.
"The collision was powerful," said Constantinos Agorastos, the governor of the Thessaly region, where the accident occurred with its capital, Larissa. He added that the first four-passenger train vehicles were derailed, while the first two vehicles, which broke out in flames immediately after the collision, were "almost destroyed."
