An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale struck northwest of the Kimbe region in Papua New Guinea.
The US Geological Survey said in a statement that the epicentre of the earthquake occurred at a depth of 598.9 km.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or material damage.
Papua New Guinea is exposed to frequent earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
