Maximiliano Sanchez Aguero of Argentina and Brazi’s Lucas Campagnolo, seeded nine, yesterday beat Spanish duo Marc Quilez and Toni Bueno 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (6) in 2 hours and 30 minutes to start the Ooredoo Qatar Major 2023 campaign on a winning note.
In another clash at Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex, Ramiro Moyano of Argentina and Spanish teammate Francisco Manuel Gil Morales yesterday beat Ricardo Martinez and Francisco Miguel Ramirez 6-4, 6-3 in 1 hour and 20 minutes.
Also moving ahead at the six-day tournament, 14th seed Javier Ruiz Gonzalez and Gonzalo Rubio from Spain proved too strong for Qatari wildcard entries Abdulla Alhijji and Mohamed Saadon al-Kuwari. Gonzalez and Rubio won 6-0, 6-1 in 52 minutes.
Another Qatari wildcard team Ali al-Saygh and Rayyan al-Jufairi lost to Francisco Guerrero and Jesus Moya (6-1, 6-2) from Spain. The third Qatar team Jabor al-Mutawa and Mohamed al-Khanji lost to Spanish duo Eduardo Alonso and Juanlu Esbri (6-0, 6-0) on the opening day’s action.
In a stunning upset, Spanish qualifiers Martin Sanchez and Pablo Garcia yesterday beat 16th seed Juan Cruz Belluati and Miguel Lamperti, both from Argentina, 6-2, 7-6 (3) in 90 minutes. Brazil’s Lucas Bergamini and Spain’s Victor Ruiz ESP, seeded 10th, beat Agustin Silingo (Argentina) Juan Martin Diaz Martinez (Spain) 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in 2 hours and 2 minutes on the centre court.
The Round of 64 matches continues today at the iconic Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex, the host venue of the €525,000 tournament.
