The Tunisian authorities announced the rescue of 423 illegal migrants from drowning in the waters of the Mediterranean, in addition to thwarting 16 attempts to illegally migrate by sea towards the European coasts.
The Tunisian National Guard stated that the naval units in Sfax, Kerkennah, Nabeul, Monastir, Tunis and Zarzis managed to thwart 16 crossing operations and rescue 423 people, including 352 from several African countries.
The Tunisian coasts have witnessed for years a large influx of illegal African migrants wishing to reach the European coasts. These attempts resulted in the drowning of thousands of people, according to the statistics of the International Organisation for Migration.
