The school's teams topped the Qatar School Debate League-II (Boys) with the highest cumulative points at DeBakey High School recently. The competition saw 132 speakers from 44 debate teams from 27 institutions.
Team Azhar Jaleel Muhammed, Krish Nagrani and Aryan Dubey bagged the Best Team of the League title. Team Aritra Ghosh, Pranay Mukala, and Nikkil were fifth. Team Abhimanyu Gupta, Surya Kauthik Basangi and Govind Krishna finished at 32nd position.
In the individual category, Azhar Jaleel Muhammed bagged the best speaker position followed by Aritra Ghosh at third, Pranay Mukala at ninth; Krish Nagrani and Nikkil D’Cruz at 13th, Aryan Dubey at 15th, Govind Krishna and Surya Kuathik Basangi at 40th and Abhimanyu Gupta at 56th position. Debaters were accompanied by their coaches Jaya Majumder and Sandhya Gopalakrishnan.
The performance of the students in this league along with the previous one enabled DPS-MIS teams to break into the National Championship.
DPS-MIS debaters were declared champions in the school category of Qatar Open Asian Parliamentary-style debate hosted by Qatar Debate at the University of Doha for Science and Technology recently. A total of 26 teams from different schools competed for the title, out of which six teams were from DPS-MIS.
Team Azhar Jaleel Muhammed, Archit Chhikara and Aryan Dubey won the best school team award and qualified for the quarterfinals. They were also ranked the fifth best team overall.
In the school category, Antara Alurkar bagged the best speaker award. Aryan Dubey and Gargee Kanade won the second best speaker award, followed by Azhar Muhammed and Vyusti Singh who bagged the fourth best speaker award. Archit Chhikara, Surya Kauthik, and Vaidehi Rogiye received the sixth best speaker award.
Out of 10 best speaker awards, DPS-MIS students won eight. In the Open Category, Antara Alurkar was ranked 13th and Gargee Kanade and Aryan Dubey at the 16th position. All 18 promising debaters debated four rounds.
The Asian Parliamentary tournament is an open tournament where anyone from the debating community can debate. The competition gave young debaters an opportunity to explore contemporary and future issues in the fields of technology, bioethics, international relations, and social equity.
The senior girls’ debate team of DPS-MIS also topped the Qatar School Debate League-II held at American Academy School. The competition was among 170 debaters, 56 debate teams and 35 institutions from across Qatar.
Team Karen Thomas, Victoria Honoridez, Drishti Tibrewal topped the league winning all four rounds followed by Team Vaidehi Rogiye, Antara Alurkar, Leen Sameer in second position. Team Vyusti Singh, Avani Anand Mondhe, Sidrah Mahvish was on 19th position with two wins.
In the individual speaker category, Victoria Honoridez was first, Vyusti Singh third, Vaidehi Rogiye seventh and Antara Alurkar tenth. The debaters presented their views on pressing issues including the Ukraine-Russia conflict, environment campaigns, acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk and labour law regulations.
“Jaya Majumder and Sandhya Gopalakrishnan played a key role in helping the debaters win,” commented principal Asna Nafees.
