The Generation Amazing Foundation – a FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 human and social legacy project – hosted a range of physical and wellness activities at its community club in Lusail on Qatar National Sport Day 2023.
Organised in partnership with Lusail Sports Club, activities included a football tournament, literacy classes, art workshops and various fitness sessions.
More than 250 people participated in the activities, including professional women footballers who were part of a delegation from the US Embassy in Qatar, plus the ambassadors of the Netherlands and Canada.
Nasser Al Khori, Executive Director, Generation Amazing Foundation, said: “Sport is an excellent means of promoting health and social integration, and for uniting people by creating opportunities for friendship, teamwork and leadership. Qatar National Sport Day is an important collective effort and reminder of this. Our community clubs, which are scattered across the world, provide a central hub for local people to connect and reap many benefits while feeling empowered over their own health and wellbeing.”
Al Khori added: “Since the launch of the Lusail community club, Generation Amazing has grown leaps and bounds. We are excited to continue this important social legacy work that builds capacity through sport and expand our community clubs – not just in Qatar but across the world, in India, the Philippines, Rwanda and beyond.”
Since its launch in 2010, Generation Amazing has built more than 30 football pitches in under-privileged communities, with those facilities now being turned into community clubs. In 2020, Generation Amazing created its first clubs – in Tacloban, the Philippines, and Rurka Kalan, India. The clubs offer a safe space for youth to gather, learn and play. They complement Generation Amazing’s football for development programme, which is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and Qatar National Vision 2030. A club was also established at the Temporary Afghan Evacuee Camp in Qatar last year as part of activities organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Lusail community club provides sporting and educational activities to youth. It focuses on teaching key life skills such as communication, organisation, teamwork and leadership, while promoting gender equality and inclusiveness. Its launch last year was attended by David Beckham, Khalid Salman, Adel Khamis and Mohammed Sadoon.
Over the past 12 years, Generation Amazing has positively impacted more than 1 million people across the globe. This milestone was celebrated at last year’s Youth Festival, when the Goal 22 cultural and sport development exchange programme was announced. The year-long programme is currently in its final phase, where youth compile their key learnings to support the development of their home communities.
Generation Amazing is planning to launch more community clubs in Qatar and globally to create a lasting social and human legacy following the success of the first FIFA World Cup in the Middle East and Arab world.
