World Bank President David Malpass has announced his resignation, saying he will leave office by June 30, a year before his term is set to end, at the height of massive institutional reforms.
"With developing countries facing unprecedented crises, I'm proud that the Bank Group has responded with speed, scale, innovation, and impact," he said in a statement. This is an opportunity for a smooth leadership transition at the Bank Group, he added.
Malpass, 66, was the 13th World Bank president. He was appointed to the position in April 2019 for a five-year term. He did not specify the reasons for his early departure.
The World Bank president recently faced criticism for questioning the climate issue and refraining from promoting financing for climate projects in developing countries.
