An earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck Thursday the basin of Lake Baikal in southern Siberia, Russia.
The Russia Today website quoted the Emergency Management Department in the Russian Irkutsk Province as saying that the earthquake occurred 18 kilometres from the village of Bolshoe Goloostnoye in the province.
There were no reports of damage from the earthquake.
Lake Baikal, located in southern Siberia, Russia, is the world's deepest freshwater lake, with a depth of 1,642 meters, and contains the largest amount of surface fresh water in the world.
