The Search and Follow-up Department at the General Directorate of Passports has arrested 19 individuals, hailing from Africa, who specialised in smuggling, sheltering and employing domestic workers illegally, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) said in a post on social media.
According to the details of the case, information was received about a house where smuggling and the illegal sheltering of workers was taking place. The house was raided after obtaining the necessary permissions, and 19 suspects - both men and women - were arrested.
The MoI said the arrested persons confessed to the charges when interrogated, which included sheltering, covering up unlawful employment, and violating the law regarding the purpose of residence, in addition to helping and harbouring runaway workers.
Accordingly, the accused were referred to the competent authorities for further legal procedures in this regard.
The competent authorities at the Ministry of Interior have called on the public not to deal with workers who violate labour laws in order to avoid any legal accountability, and to report them in case of suspicion through the Metrash2 application.
