Qatar has stressed that it would never hesitate to make unremitting efforts to continue its role as an effective strategic partner in response to needs and challenges, especially in the most vulnerable communities, noting that it has undertaken several initiatives and contributions that had a positive impact on the lives of millions around the world. Qatar will continue its leading efforts, work closely with multilateral organizations, support the efforts to strengthen the international partnership for achieving sustainable development, and alleviate the burdens of common challenges.
This came in a recorded speech delivered by HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani in front of the Special High-Level Event of the General Assembly and ECOSOC: Doha Program of Action as an accelerator of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. HE the Foreign Minister indicated that Qatar is a prime partner in the efforts made to respond to the needs and priorities of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), stressing that the international community's solidarity in supporting the Least Developed Countries to implement the Doha Program of Action will contribute to achieving the comprehensive and sustainable developments of these countries and build their capacities to stand resilient in the face of future crises.
HE Sheikh Mohamed expressed his appreciation to President of the 77th United Nations General Assembly Csaba Korosi and President of the Economic and Social Council Lachezara Stoeva for holding that special high-level event. He also commended the endeavours made to grant the Doha Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries a significant place on the agenda of the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council, especially since this program is the result of the concerted efforts and constructive participation of various partners and entities.
He explained that while current crises emphasise the importance of intensifying multilateral co-operation and co-ordinated collective action, the changing global scene and its variable challenges, including the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, the food and energy crisis, and the existing conflicts, continue to place enormous burdens, particularly on the Least Developed Countries and their prospects of development.
HE Sheikh Mohamed said that in the context of the magnitude of these unprecedented challenges and the need to take comprehensive and tangible measures to achieve results, Qatar is confident that the Doha Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries for the Decade 2022-2031, including the ambitious and enhanced commitments it entails, undoubtedly constitute a cornerstone and the foundation to support the people of the Least Developed Countries in their endeavours to recover, accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, and help them address the intersecting crises and existing challenges.
HE the Foreign Minister expressed his confidence that the positive momentum that marked the adoption of the Doha Program of Action will continue during the second part of the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) that will be held in Doha during March 5-9, pointing out that Qatar aspires that this conference to be the culmination of a long process that witnessed the prominent participation of all concerned partners and stakeholders.
He stressed that the conference is a once-in-a-decade opportunity to highlight the political momentum and deliver a message to show the collective commitment and readiness of the international community to mobilize the efforts and establish comprehensive international partnerships that effectively meet the particular demands of the Least Developed Countries.
He pointed out that despite the difficulty of the current phase, these variables can be considered an opportunity to accelerate progress to enhance development horizons, expressing his hope that the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) will form a step in the right direction, provide an opportunity to stimulate transformative measures, and once again confirms that our collective success lies in the effectiveness of the full implementation of the Doha Program of Action by all partners and stakeholders.
