Arctic frost has swept across Italy, with sub-zero temperatures as ice and snow spread.
A record low of - 22.8 degrees Celsius was recorded on the Piani di Pezza ice plain, at an altitude of 1,450 metres above sea level on Monte Velino in a mountain range in Abruzzo, central Italy.
The polar air wave is set to break according to meteorologists and the weather will be milder and sunny in most parts later this week.
