Bangladesh is one of the key countries in which Qatar Charity (QC) has a clear footprint in the field of education. During the past five years, the QC has built 38 schools that include boarding departments and other facilities, some of which were established in remote areas.
These schools have provided educational opportunities to at least 10,000 students, and Qatar Charity is currently working on building 15 schools.
Once these 15 facilities are completed, 3,000 more students will have similar educational opportunities.
The QC is currently sponsoring 3,312 orphans to ensure their future.
On the occasion of International Education Day, which falls Tuesday, January 24, every year, Qatar Charity is celebrating its achievements in the field of education around the world.
The QC operates in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe, as well as in areas of crises and disasters.
Hira Secondary School, which is located in the Bagerhat region of southern Bangladesh and was built by the QC in 2017, is one of the educational models that has made a big difference to the people who live in the area; it helped fill a void at the time because there was no school or educational facility there.
The school has become a source of pride for the residents whose children were deprived of education for many years, including orphans in the Bagerhat region.
Several officials have thanked Qatar Charity for its support of education in the remote areas of Bangladesh.
School principal Zohra Begum said: "The number of students in Hira school is 700, with 300 new students accepted annually into different classes."
She added that the school contains housing, currently benefiting 200 orphan and poor students.
Orphaned students receive financial assistance from the QC to complete their studies.
Education ministry official Firoz Ahmed said: "Qatar Charity plays an important role in the education sector in Bangladesh, as it has built schools that contain various facilities that provide a suitable environment for students."
"We appreciate this achievement,” he continued. “Qatar Charity has focused on remote and neglected areas where educational facilities are not available for the population, providing an appropriate educational environment and preventing thousands of children from dropping out of school.”
“Its efforts have played a major role in reducing the illiteracy rate to zero in Bangladesh,” Ahmed said.
Zahid al-Islam, an elected representative of the local government in the region, has praised the school.
"Hira is not just a school,” he said. “It is an exceptional educational institution.”
