Qatar Charity (QC) announced the launch of several humanitarian and development projects in Sri Lanka, which will be implemented during 2023, a statement said Wednesday.
This came during a meeting of M U M Ali Sabry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, with Yusuf bin Ahmed al-Kuwari, CEO of QC, and the delegation at the Foreign Ministry, in the presence of many officials.
During the visit of QC’s delegation to Sri Lanka, a ceremony was held to resume its activities and inaugurate a new office in the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, in the presence of ambassador Jassim bin Jaber al-Sorour, many Sri Lankan government officials, and Arab ambassadors.
During the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka, al-Kuwari underscored QC’s determination to provide all possible support to Sri Lanka. He noted QC’s keenness to ensure that its development interventions, which are expected to be implemented by its office in Colombo, will be consistent with the strategic plans of the ministries and authorities concerned in Sri Lanka. He praised the support provided by the various Sri Lankan government bodies to QC to facilitate its humanitarian and development missions in the country.
The projects worth $11mn, which will be implemented by QC in Sri Lanka, come in accordance with its 2023 plan. Minister Ali Sabry, welcomed QC’s pledge to implement the new projects this year, terming the initiative as an important step and an integral part of the historical relations between the two countries.
He also appreciated QC’s efforts in the field of humanitarian and development work at the local and international levels, and thanked it for its support for the vulnerable. He hoped that QC would continue to aid those in need in Sri Lanka in the areas of health, education, food security, economic empowerment, housing, and social care.
It was in 1993 that QC commenced its activities in Sri Lanka, where the projects and programmes were implemented in co-ordination with local charitable organisations until its office was opened in Colombo in 2018, the statement added.
