US President Joe Biden has arrived in Mexico ahead of the 2023 North American Leaders' Summit (NALS) which will be held in Mexico city Tuesday.
Biden will hold bilateral meetings with Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ahead of the trilateral summit which brings together the US President, the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Mexico, dubbed also as the "Three Amigos" summit.
While trade and environmental issues are also on the table, Biden has put a surge in irregular migration and dangerous drug smuggling front and centre of his trip, his first to Mexico as president.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that with his visit, the first to Mexico since becoming president, Biden expects to "promote a common vision for North America."
Jean-Pierre said Biden would be making announcements about expanding cooperation to combat trafficking of arms, drugs and humans, as well as addressing environmental challenges and steps to "jointly address irregular migration in the region."
Earlier on Sunday, Biden traveled to El Paso, Texas, to assess enforcement operations at the US-Mexico border - his first trip to the border since taking office - just days after his administration announced new restrictions on asylum seekers amid record numbers of migrants attempting to cross into the United States.
