The first edition of the Abu Sidra Mall Chess Championship, which was held over three days in two phases, has successfully concluded.
The event was staged in the presence of Haroun Qadri, Director of Abu Sidra Mall; Mohamed al-Madhahka, President of the Qatar Chess Federation (QCF); and Youssef Mohamed al-Mutawa, Secretary-General of QCF.
The first stage was held on the opening day within Blitz chess competitions consisting 11 rounds, while the second and third days were held under the rapid chess system (Under-14 years of 9 rounds).
On the opening day and the blitz chess competitions, a strong and exciting competition was witnessed with a large participation of 130 players.
Moldovan Victor Bologan won the title, occupying the first place, while the the second spot was clinched by Mohamed al-Madhahka. Zhou Shen finished in third place. Hisham Hamdoushi was fourth.
In the prizes for the best Qatari player in the tournament, Youssef Mohamed al-Mutawa emerged first, Rayan Irfan was second while Khaled al-Khulaifi was third. The Best Player award went to Amolia Guruprasad (India).
As for the under-14 rapid chess competitions, 142 male and female players featured in the event. The first place and title went to Rayan Irfan. Syed Abdul Qadir (India) was second. Tax Sharma (India) was third.
The best Qatari player Ibrahim al-Janahi. In the second place was Amer al-Hammadi while Mohamed al-Qahtani was third. In fourth place was Khaled al-Jamaat. In the awards for the best Qatari player, Fatima al-Hammadi emerged first while Haya al-Husseini was placed second. Asma al-Hammadi finished third. The fourth place was secured by Loujain Ibrahim. The Best Player award went to Amolia Guruprasad (India).
Al-Madhahka, President of QCF, praised the levels presented during the tournament.
“I would like to commend the level of Qatari players during the competitions. The federation’s plans is to hold a large number of events in order to engage young players. I want to thank the officials at Abu Sidra Mall. We are happy to hold the first edition and we hope that our co-operation will continue to hold many tournaments and activities in the future also.”
