Qatar University’s (QU) Young Scientists Centre (YSC) has launched the third cycle of its December Aladaam Initiative, which comes as a continuation of the successes achieved by the previous two cycles. The national outreach programme is launched annually, throughout December. The theme and the slogan varies each year to suit the slogan of the Qatar National Day (QND).
In the third cycle, the initiative focused on the QND slogan 2022, which is ‘Our unity is the source of our strength’, an excerpt from a speech of his Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The goals of the initiative have also expanded to include presenting and highlighting the studies and scientific researches originating from QU and related to innovation and sustainability in the sports field, and Qatar's hosting of the 2022 World Cup.
The YSC included participants from various colleges and departments at QU, in addition to assigning some films to secondary school students. A total of 23 male and female students participated in the initiative, including six high school students, who presented their innovative project ideas they had worked on during their participation in the Science in Sports programme, under the YSC. QU students participated from five different colleges -- Medicine, Health Sciences, Engineering, Education and Law.
Through short films they presented the most important research and studies carried out in various fields to serve the organisation of the World Cup. The films discussed different studies and research as maintaining heritage, achieving sustainability, providing security and safety for players and fans, as well as, the innovative cooling techniques in Qatar stadiums and the intelligent crowd management systems during the World Cup. The films also raised important topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Qatar's sports law, and the importance of preserving green spaces. The initiative included 10 short films, which were prepared and edited with the help of three QU students. The films are published and shared with all community members on social media and YouTube.
Prof Noora Jaber al-Thani, director of the QU-YSC said: “The celebration of Qatar National Day enhances the loyalty and belonging and also motivates the youth to achieve more successes and achievements for our country. This year's celebration is unique, as it coincides with the hosting of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and that is why the YSC launched a new cycle of December Aladaam Initiative, to reflect the most important contributions and studies performed by QU to support this mega event. In addition, the initiative clarified that the unity of all parties in Qatar, including Qatar University, has a fundamental impact on the strength of Qatar, it’s progress and development among the countries of the world.”
