Peru's Vice President Dina Boluarte was sworn-in on Wednesday as the country's interim president, hours after Congress has removed President Castillo from office.
In her first speech before Congress as president, Boluarte said that there has been an attempted coup "promoted by Pedro Castillo, which has not found an echo in the institutions of democracy and the street."
"I request a political truce to install a government of national unity," she said.
Dina Boluarte, 60, became Peru's first female president. She rode into office in July 2021 as Castillo's vice president.
Castillo was ousted by Congress Wednesday after he announced plans to dissolve Congress and install an emergency government.
Attorney General Daniel Soria has filed a criminal complaint against the ousted President Castillo for the unconstitutional measure adopted, while local media reported that Castillo was detained by the Public Prosecutor's Office and the police at the headquarters of the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima.
