Ooredoo Qatar is the platinum sponsor for the Mzayen World Cup, organised by Qatar Camel Mzayen Club, and running until December 2.
This uniquely memorable event will be a fascinating insight into the more traditional, cultural side of Qatar, presenting the football fans in town with a truly upgraded experience in the Middle East, a statement said.
The prestigious camel racing event, which opened yesterday (Thursday) will comprise 15 rounds held in the mornings and among the categories of Al Mughatir, Al Asayel and Al Mujaheem, with three runs for each category. The total prize value is more than QR10mn, with gold, silver and bronze cups and decorations awarded to the top three winners respectively in all 15 rounds. A first-of-its-kind camel museum, riding shows and milking competition are among the other attractions at the event.
Sabah Rabiah al-Kuwari, Director PR at Ooredoo, said: “Given the clear role of sport in bridging the gap between cultures, Ooredoo is excited to showcase this noble sport to the world alongside the mega-event, the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. We hope that the many international visitors to Qatar will take this must-see opportunity to come and explore something of our folklore, legends and identity, taking away some wonderful memories over and above the excitement of the football action to their part of the world.”
Camel racing is a Qatari tradition tracing its roots back to the Bedouins. While Qatar is now a country transformed by rapid globalisation, younger generations of Qataris are following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents, as immensely proud of their heritage, one which has entrenched the values, ideals, and morals of today.
Camels are an important historical symbol of Qatar; the animals became known as the ‘ships of the desert’, transporting goods from the port to markets throughout the country. Therefore, it is fitting that the official song of the Mzayen World Cup is entitled ‘Desert Dhows’, as it welcomes guests to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and invites fans to get to know Qataris and their customs and traditions by attending the event during their time in Qatar.
Ooredoo’s sponsorship of the Mzayen World Cup is the latest in a series of collaborations that aim to provide an unrivalled World Cup experience for everyone, the statement added.
