Qatar-based Islamic scholar Dr Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi has expressed his relief at the Islamists winning the elections in Egypt and saw their victory as a sign of the strength of the Muslim nation.
In his Friday sermon at Omar bin Al-Khattab mosque yesterday, he said that this was a strong indicator that people still hold fast to their religion and Islam is still their first main reference and resort.
He also called on the Islamists in Egypt to live up to the expectations of the people and give life to a nation that has been so long sunk in corruption. “They should embody the principles of tolerance and struggle to make life easy for people.”
Al-Qaradawi wished Egypt all good in the hands of the new government and called for peaceful co-existence of the different parties. He pointed out that the nation should not reject anybody so long as he maintains the good of the
nation.
Regarding the escalating and deteriorating situation in Syria, al-Qaradawi reiterated his support and admiration to the resolution of the Syrian people who have offered more than 6,000 martyrs during the last 10 months.
He called upon the Arab League observers to go out for those rebels in every village and street and support them.
He wondered that in republican regimes the ruler stays in power for a maxim of eight or 10 years, but Assad wants to go on with his dictatorship even after the people have raised their voices loudly demanding his ouster. “People are becoming hungry there, and they need food to survive,” said
al-Qaradawi.
The scholar called on the courageous and honest personnel in the Syrian army to break away from the regime and turn their weapons on it instead of their brothers.
He said that it is not religiously permissible for them to shoot their people. “They can take action and go out in thousands against the oppressive government to support their brothers,” he added.
