Al-Mannai receives the award during a ceremony in Oman
The Social Development Centre’s (SDC) executive director, Amal al-Mannai, has become the first Qatari woman to receive the “Female Civil Society Leader of the Year” award in recognition of her community development initiatives
at SDC.
The awards were announced at the Third Annual Tawassul Civil Society Leaders (CSL) Awards in Muscat, Oman.
The CSL awards programme is one of the social investment programmes of Tawassul, an initiative designed to empower the civil society in Oman through conferences, seminars, workshops, media outreach, as well as other events and activities and it is considered one of the most prestigious accolades in the GCC region.
“I would like to thank Tawassul for this award, and my team at SDC for their hard work and tireless support which has made this possible. In 16 years, SDC has come a long way with its community development initiatives which have been created to meet the needs of different segments of society, including children, adults and the elderly,”
al-Mannai noted.
She mentioned that the centre is focused on enabling individuals, communities and businesses to become self-reliant and to have a positive impact on society through vocational training, business, and volunteering
opportunities.
In addition to her role at SDC, al-Mannai is actively involved in several humanitarian activities and efforts aimed at building an efficient Qatari society, such as the AFIF Fund for small and medium enterprises, National Human Rights Committee, Pearl GTL sustainable development advisory committee of Qatar Shell and the Qatar Intilaqaah Programme.
As an advocate for women’s and children’s rights and a social activist, al-Mannai has been a member of the Social Gender Committee, National Strategic Women Development Committee (Qatar) and National Strategic Childhood Project Committee (at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs).
During the selection process at the Third CSL Awards, social investment programmes from private and public sectors across the GCC region, including women’s and charitable organisations, made it to the final selection of award recipients.
The jury consisted of senior representatives from the private and public sectors, as well as non-governmental
organisations in Oman.
After evaluation, 26 finalists were short-listed according to the results, long-term impact, project profile, innovation and stakeholder engagement.
SDC’s social and community development initiatives include its dynamic volunteer programme, Kafu awareness campaign for volunteering, Rasameel business funding programme and the Reyada Awards for Entrepreneurs.
