Indian embassy First Secretary M R Qureshi and other guests jointly releasing the brochure brought out in memory of Jagjit Singh at the Shaam-e-Ghazal at the Indian Cultural Centre
A group of singers from the Indian and Pakistani communities revived memories of phenomenal Indian ghazal singer Jagjit Singh at a concert ‘Argon Global Shaam-e-Ghazal’ held in his honour at the Indian Cultural Centre recently.
The ghazal maestro passed away in Mumbai two months ago.
The concert featured a number of singers from the two communities who entertained ghazal buffs with a medley of memorable numbers.
Hosted by music group Doha Waves, the event had veteran singers as well as a school girl, Vasundara Kasuri, regaling music lovers with many popular ghazal compositions.
Abul Khair gave superb start to the event with a flawless rendition of Singh’s ‘Dard se mera daaman bhar de’.
Other singers included Doha Waves performer Mohamed Thoyyib as well as Rajiv Saxena, Hidayathulla and Ziyad Khan.
The singers also rendered popular ghazals sung by legendary Mohamed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Kishore Kumar, Mehdi Hassan and Pankaj Udhas.
The youngest performer of the day, Vasundhara drew terrific applause at intervals from the listeners. The talented singer, a Doha schoolgirl, had performed at some television realty shows in India in recent years.
Paying rich tributes to Singh, chief guest and Indian embassy first secretary M R Qureshi recalled some of the great songs sung by him and praised the performers for enlivening the event with quality rendition of his ghazals.
Thanking the ICC and sponsors for their support, Mohamed Thoyyib said his forum would hold a music programme for children of the country’s Asian and Arab communities shortly.
