Lord Howell
The UK Minister for International Energy Policy, Lord Howell is visiting Qatar to attend the 20th World Petroleum Congress taking place at the Qatar National Convention Centre this week.
Commenting on his visit, Lord Howell said: “I am delighted to be able to attend the World Petroleum Congress hosted by Qatar.  The continuing uncertainty in the world economy makes this year’s conference particularly important.  Providing secure and affordable energy supplies is of concern to all countries and the congress offers a real opportunity to bring producers and consumers together with industry.”
“The UK and Qatar enjoy a strong and mutually beneficial relationship on energy security - Qatari gas made up over a quarter of all UK gas imports in 2010,” he said, adding “this will increase in the coming decades, making the UK a dependable and secure partner for Qatari investment in the energy sector and beyond.”
“The UK and Qatar are close friends and have existing partnerships in education, health and culture”
“The UK supports the leading role that Qatar plays in the region, particularly in mediation and conflict resolution,” he said, noting “we welcome their decisive action against the Syrian regime through the Arab League, as well as their essential efforts bringing peace to Libya.”
The Minister will meet with a number of Qatari ministers and officials during his visit, as well as taking the opportunity to experience some of the work that British companies are doing in Qatar through visits to Qatar Shell and the Qatar Science and Technology Park, including the Williams Technology Centre and the Qatar Shell Research and Technology Centre.
