Six months of bloodshed: The toll on Gaza’s children

The bloodiest ever Gaza war which broke out over six months ago has taken an appalling toll on children. NGO Save the Children estimates that some 26,000 children have been killed or injured in the war, 17,000 have been orphaned, according to UNICEF, and 1 in 3 children under two years old in northern Gaza is suffering from acute malnutrition. In total, at least 33,207 people have been killed in the besieged Palestinian territory in Israel's retaliatory campaign for the October 7 attack, according to Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry. The unprecedented Hamas raid on southern Israel resulted in the deaths of 1,170 Israelis and foreigners, most of them civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. AFP

Gazans struggle to secure flour for daily bread

"I spent the night on Kuwait Roundabout to secure this bag of flour", says a Palestinian in Gaza City carrying a bag of flour he managed to get from an aid truck. A UN-backed report warned that half of Gazans are experiencing "catastrophic" hunger, with famine projected to hit the north of the territory unless there is urgent intervention. AFP

Winners of Qatar CSR awards announced

The organizing committee of Qatar Social Responsibility (CSR) Conference and Exhibition revealed the names of winners of Qatar CSR awards, highlighting that the awards included 24 diverse categories that covered most of economic sectors.Public Works Authority (Ashghal) won the award of best initiative for social responsibility in the public sector for the program to support local manufacturers in infrastructure projects, with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry receiving an appreciation award in the same category in recognition of its efforts dedicated to lending impetus to social responsibility in Qatar, the organizing committee reported in a statement on Saturday.The committee added that the award of best initiative in the non-governmental organizations sector went to the Innovation Cafe for the program of supporting the Qatari potential, noting that Qatar Cancer Society received an appreciation award for its total achievements in 2023. Regarding the most innovative initiative, Weill Cornell Medicine won the award for Lifehub initiative that was launched during the Doha Expo, with the FMM-Facilities Management and Maintenance Company winning the award of the most comprehensive initiative pertaining to its diverse initiatives in sustainability, health, education, and workers well-being.QNB Group won the award of best initiative in banking and financial sector, along with the environmental, social, and corporate governance enhancement program, the committee pointed out. It added that Ooredoo won the award for Doha Marathon in communications and information technology sector. Also, Aamal Services won the award devoted to the private sector regarding the summer program initiative for trainees, with Snoonu winning the award of best initiative in technology sector for "No Riders under the Sun" initiative.Additionally, LuLu Group International won the award of the retail sector, with Al Baladi Holding receiving an appreciation award in this category, the committee said, highlighting that Bonocle won the prestigious award for its initiative for first Braille-based education and entertainment platform for the visually impaired.In health and transportation sectors, Alfardan Medical with Northwestern Medicine (AMNM) won the award ahead of WELLKINS Medical Centre, which received an appreciation award, while Al Abdulghani Motors won the award after submitting the Rashfa initiative. Additionally, Sika Qatar won the Best Initiative in the construction sector award for the Green Building Initiatives, with Papercut Factory winning the best initiative in the industrial sector category.Darwish Interserve Facility Management won the award for the facilities management sector, with the United Development Company (UDC Qatar) winning the award of best initiative in the real estate development sector for the environment and sustainability strategy on The Pearl Island.The best initiative in the environmental sector went to Aqua Sports for the project to preserve and renew mangrove forests in Qatar, while Rayyan Water won the award for the sustainable production program.Regarding Tourism and hospitality, Heenat Salma Farm project ranked first, with Talabat winning the award of best initiative in food sector. The Cooking Academy (TCA) won an appreciation award for its steadfast efforts in promoting the traditional Qatari kitchen worldwide.Public Parks Department at the Ministry of Municipality won the award for the "Seedlings to Your Home" initiative in the field of agricultural sector, the organizing committee stated, adding that Al Jazeera Media Institute was the owner of a groundbreaking initiative in the media sector, namely Al Jazeera Ambassadors" volunteer initiative and won the award for this initiative.The committee outlined that in the sporting events, the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) won the competition for the Energy Conservation Initiative (ECI), with A101 Company winning the Education's Tamreen initiative.President of Mubadara for Social Impact and CEO of the National CSR Program Dr Saif Ali al-Hajri said the ceremony of Qatar CSR awards came to spotlight these efforts to be a model for serving the society, environment and human, pointing out that the event came to strengthen the contributions of all entities to providing best life, a more just and sustainable economy for a variety of society segments, in addition to honouring those who contributed to developing social responsibility and sustainability agenda in Qatar.A partnership was unveiled on the margins on this ceremony between CSR and Unesco Chair on Governance and Social Responsibility in sports to further support research and consultation in social responsibility (Corporate) in all sectors.The organizing committee received 114 initiatives nominated by entities in the public and private sectors and all were entirely reviewed to determine the winners by a special jury at the QU's College of Business and Economics which included 20 members of the colleges professors and teachers.The 2nd edition of the Qatar CSR Summit brought together over 65 local and international speakers with the attendance of over 4,000 professionals during the three-day conference sessions. The participants hailed the content presented through an array of panel discussions and workshops that dedicated a space for a substantial number of experts and speakers, as the edition drew a host of delegations from Jordan, Lebanon, the Sultanate of Oman, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and others.
