A man stabbed to death on Portobello Road died fleeing his attackers after leaving a bar, police said yesterday.

The victim was named as Tony Charlery, 59.

He died from a stab wound to the neck inflicted shortly before midnight on Saturday.

His next of kin have been informed.

Charlery went to the Mau Mau bar in Porotobello Road for a short while. As he left, he was stabbed as he tried to run away from his attackers, detectives said today.

Detective chief inspector Nicola Wall of the homicide & major crime command said: “He was only inside the venue for a short while and was stabbed as he left. Tony received the fatal wound as he tried to run away from his attackers.”

“I appeal to anyone who knows the identity of the persons involved to call detectives. Tony was a local man and a much loved grandfather. His family are devastated by his death in such a brutal way.

“As I believe the two suspects to be local men, I especially appeal to the Notting Hill community for help.”

l A woman has died in hospital four days after she was rescued from a huge fire at a house in north London.

The victim was carried to safety by firefighters Sunday morning from the first floor of the house in Sweet Briar Green, Edmonton.

She was taken to hospital by an ambulance crew but died of her injuries on Thursday, the London Fire Brigade said.

The house was badly damaged in the blaze which destroyed the roof, most of the first floor and half of the second floor.

Three other people left the building before fire crews arrived.

The cause of the fire, which was tackled by firefighters from Tottenham, Enfield, Southgate and Walthamstow fire stations, is under investigation.

l An appeal has launched to find a set of valuable bronze statues of frogs stolen from an art gallery.

The eight unique Frogman statues were taken from Montague’s Gallery, in Kings Langley, between 10.30am and 10.40am on August 22.

Police said the suspect is a white man believed to be in his 40s, with short sandy coloured hair. He was wearing a black jacket with a multi-coloured Adidas logo on the back and dark blue jeans.

Neil Hunt said: “When purchasing these frogs the customer is given a certificate from Frogman with the name and edition number of the frog, These items cannot be easily sold on as people will not buy without these certificates.

“I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the crime or has seen these items since they were stolen.”

The first picture of a young father stabbed to death in broad daylight just moments after he wheeled his baby boy home has been released.

l Adrian Young, 24, seemed “happy” as he had lunch with his girlfriend Lisa Stanley and his seven-month-old son at nearby Doodlebug’s café just minutes before he was set upon by a group of men.

Known as Andre to his friends and family, the young father was knifed during the attack at around 4.30pm on Tuesday and died two hours later in hospital.

Shopkeeper Abdul Sam, who has known Young for almost 20 years, said: “He had been having lunch with his girlfriend and baby boy.

“It was terrible and very sad for one so young. He was a good boy and seemed really, really happy – I can’t believe it to be honest.”

Floral tributes were stacked against Stanley’s home just yards from where her boyfriend was killed.

She told the Standard: “I can’t get my head around it – this is his son. I just can’t say anything about it right now.”

One tribute, left by his brother Krishawn, said: “Cousin, brother, father, RIP Cuzzy you will forever be in my heart and mind forever and ever and those who went against you shall be truly punished in the house of the Lord.”

Another from Jamie, said: “Fondest memories of cousin. I love you so much. Words cannot explain how much you are missed.”

Detectives investigating the murder of Adrian Young have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder.

He is currently in custody in a south London police station.
