Spain’s King Juan Carlos is recovering well from his third hip operation this year, a surgeon at a Madrid hospital said yesterday.
The 74-year-old monarch had a prosthesis fitted into his left hip on Friday and will remain at the San Jose clinic in the capital for three to four days.
Surgeon Angel Villamor told reporters that the king would fully recover in about a month.
In April, Juan Carlos had a prosthesis fitted into his right hip after falling during a hunting expedition to Botswana. Twelve days later, he was again operated on, after the hip had become dislocated.
Juan Carlos issued an unprecedented apology to the public after he was criticised for going hunting in Botswana while Spain was mired in an economic crisis.
The king has been absent intermittently from public life since May 2010 after undergoing several operations.
