The Asean Committee in Doha (ACD), represented by diplomats from seven countries, and the Doha Environmental Actions Project (Deap Qatar) co-organised a clean-up initiative at the Singing Sand Dunes, located 40 km southwest of Doha on Saturday.
The initiative demonstrated the ACD’s support to Deap Qatar in promoting sustainable development and preserving the environment in conjunction with Qatar Sustainability Week which runs until October 15, it was explained in a statement from the Thai embassy.
The programme was in line with the Asean Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC) Blueprint 2025, which envisions the people-centred and environmentally friendly Asean Community.
The initiative was attended by the ACD ambassadors - Mohamed Bahrin Abu Bakar (Brunei), Ridwan Hassan (Indonesia), Zamshari Shaharan (Malaysia), Jai S Sohan (Singapore), Nathapol Khantahiran (Thailand), Tran Duc Hung (Vietnam), and the Philippines embassy charge d’affaires Cassandra B Sawadjaan.
In addition, 135 participants from the Asean diplomatic missions, their family members, and the Asean community volunteered for the initiative.
"The ACD would like to thank Deap Qatar, Al Wakra Municipality, and the Asean Community for supporting the initiative, and we hope that it will spark greater interest and raise public awareness for environmental conservation and waste reduction," the statement said.
"We hope this initiative will inspire the community at large to embark on a long-term commitment to keep Qatar clean and contribute to the sustainability efforts, as highlighted in the National Vision 2030," it added.
"We are incredibly grateful for the participation of diplomats from the Asean Committee in Doha and members of the community," said Deap Qatar director Jose Saucedo.
“Plastic pollution is a major global problem. The whole world is trying to figure it out. At Deap Qatar we aspire to be able to inspire and empower our youth and the public to take action against plastic pollution. It really takes all of us to raise environmental awareness, and to be part of the solution and not part of the pollution," he added.
