Qatar chaired a session for the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the General Assembly at its seventy-seventh session, QNA reported.
Qatar was represented by Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz al-Thani. Qatar had been elected as Vice-Chair of the Second Committee for the Asian and Pacific Group of States.
The Second Committee deals with issues relating to economic growth and development such as macroeconomic policy questions; financing for development; sustainable development; globalisation and interdependence; eradication of poverty; operational activities for development; agriculture development, food security and nutrition; information and communications technologies for development; and implementation of the New Urban Agenda.
The Committee considered the reports submitted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, including: Progress made in the implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society at the regional and international levels; Declaration on the Establishment of a New International Economic Order; Fulfilling the promise of globalisation: advancing sustainable development in an interconnected world; International migration and development.
The election of Qatar as Vice-Chair of the UN General Assembly Second Committee was in recognition of its role in strengthening the global partnership for achieving sustainable development, as well as its efforts in the field of development, working with partners and multilateral organisations, and providing the necessary resources and financing.
In this context, Qatar will host the second part of the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha from March 5 to 9, 2023.
Qatar looks forward for this conference to be a milestone event that meets the level of aspirations and expectations of the least developed countries and supports their path towards achieving sustainable and comprehensive development in the next ten years.
