Qatar has urged all parties to exercise restraint, avoid further escalation, and adhere to peaceful and diplomatic means to settle disputes and differences between Russia and Ukraine. This came in a statement made by HE Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Sheikha Alya Ahmed bin Saif al-Thani in front of the emergency special session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on the situation in Ukraine.
Expressing dismay over the ongoing developments in Ukraine and its humanitarian repercussions, the statement said that over the past few days the world witnessed once again the woes and pain of armed violence. "Qatar is following the current developments in Ukraine and their humanitarian repercussions with great concern, and the dangerous consequences of conflict escalation on international peace and security as well as on the economy and food security around the world.
The statement stressed that Qatar's foreign policy principles are based on adhering to the purposes, principles and provisions of the UN Charter, including the provisions of Article 2 regarding the settlement of international disputes by peaceful means and refraining from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. From this standpoint, Qatar affirmed respect for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
The statement added that Qatar is convinced that the way to settle the current crisis and meet the legitimate concerns of all parties is through constructive dialogue in a spirit of compromise based on the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations, in addition to implementing existing agreements, reaching comprehensive and sustainable solutions, and ensuring that the legitimate concerns of all parties are met.
Qatar called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, international human rights law and international humanitarian law to facilitate rapid, safe and unimpeded access for providing aid to those in need. It also urged the authorities to protect civilians and facilities as well as medical and humanitarian workers.
It also stressed the need to protect the rights of those affected by violence, displaced persons and refugees as a top priority and provide the necessary assistance while adhering to the international principles for providing humanitarian assistance. (QNA)
