According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), India ranks 10th among 185 countries for contribution from travel and tourism to a nation's GDP. In 2020, the tourism sector in India accounted for 39mn jobs, which was 8% of the total employment in the country.
By 2029, it is expected to account for about 53mn jobs. India ranks 34th on the world travel and tourism index driven by rich natural and cultural resources. The World Economic Forum has ranked India as the fifth best destination on the World Natural Heritage Index.
While the pandemic initially brought the tourism industry to a halt, the government has begun reviving domestic and inbound international tourism. Electronic tourist authorisations, also known as e-Tourist Visa, launched in November 2021 by the Government of India to revive the tourism industry, has since resulted in an increase in the number of tourist visas issued. The facility is now available to citizens of 171 countries.
Mittal congratulated IBPC, ITPF and travel professionals present at the occasion, emphasising the importance of increasing tourism between India and Qatar keeping 2022 FIFA World Cup in mind.
He further highlighted that India is a key destination for medical and naturopathy tourism, and many travellers from Qatar now visit numerous wellness destinations in India. The ambassador encouraged the travel fraternity to share experiences, case studies, and testimonies of their clients travelling to India to create more awareness about India as a tourist destination.
