The Indonesian embassy in Qatar held an 'Indonesia Culinary Night' on Monday in the presence of the ambassadors of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, Korea, Turkey and Australia.
“Indonesia has at least food ingredients consisting of 77 sources of carbohydrates, more than 400 types of fruits, 273 vegetables, and about 65 types of herbs or spices," ambassador Ridwan Hassan told the gathering.
"So, it’s safe to say that Indonesia is a big player in the world’s culinary arena," he said while explaining that over the next few years, the government plans to develop 4,000 Indonesian restaurants worldwide.
The event at Marsa Malaz Kempinski featured Indonesian specialty dishes such as Gado-Gado (salad), Opor Ayam (chicken dish cooked by coconut milk), Soto Ayam Lamongan (popular chicken soup), Rendang Beef (chosen as the #1 in the world's 50 best food voters in 2011 by CNN), Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Satay, and Pempek, prepared by Indonesian chefs residing in Qatar.
The evening also saw dance performances by Indonesia’s Puspa Kinarya and the traditional angklung music performances by Indonesia Ladies Angklung.
