The Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will be performing at Auditorium 3 of the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) on Saturday,October 9, featuring one of only two symphonies that Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart composed in minor keys.
Symphony No. 40 in G Minor highlights Mozart’s intrigue in the darker art movement known as “Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress)”, in which stronger emotions were showcased.
The concert, which will be held from 5pm to 7.30pm, will also feature music from Gioachino Antonio Rossini’s *The Barber of Seville, a piece described as one of the greatest opera buffas of all time.
*The Barber of Seville (1815) of Rossini is the greatest comic opera ever.
Many of Rossini’s operas are rarely performed, but *The Barber of Seville has continued to be displayed on the world stage without interruption.
Mozart’s *Concerto in C Major, K 314 was originally composed in the spring or summer of 1777 for oboist Giuseppe Ferlendis from Bergamo, then reworked by the composer as a concerto for flute in D Major in 1778.
The concerto is a widely-studied piece for both instruments and is one of the more important concerti for the oboe.
As with his *Flute Concerto No. 1, the piece is arranged for a standard set of orchestral strings, two oboes, and two horns.
French violinist Lionel Schmit, who is renowned for his phenomenological approach to music, will be the concertmaster and conductor of the performance.
He joined the QPO in September 2019 as 1st concertmeister.
Schmit is a laureate of the international competition T.Varga, R.Lipizer and young European soloists, where he won the gold medal.
He is supported by foundations such as the Cziffra Foundation, Fondation de France, Fond instrumental français, and Fondation Zilber, among others.
An eclectic violinist, Schmit’s repertoire ranges from chamber music to soloist repertoire, from contemporary music to electro-acoustic and tango with the encounter of Richard Galliano.
In the area of recording, “The Rothschild violin” is the project that most obviously characterises his artistic approach.
Schmit plays a violin by Domenicus Busan, made in Venice around 1770, graciously loaned by the Ghasarossian company.
The concert will also witness German Diaz Blanco performing.
He has been the QPO’s principal oboist since 2014, performing, and has collaborated as principal oboist with many orchestras such as Seoul Philharmonic, Musikcollegium Winterthur, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Bach Collegium Munchen, Camerata Salzburg, and Symphony Orchestra of Tenerife.
As a chamber music player, Blanco is regularly invited to perform with Plural Ensemble (Madrid) and Quantum Ensemble (Tenerife).
He won prizes in international oboe competitions as well, including Third Prize in the International Oboe Competition “Giuseppe Tomassini” in Petritoli (Italy, 2010), and Special Prize of the Jury in the International Oboe Competition “Gheorghe Dima”.
