The Duhail area will get pedestrian and cycle paths, as part of the Duhail Interchange Upgrade Project. The paths, according to the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) website, will be completed by the second quarter of 2022.
Ashghal currently focuses on developing infrastructure that enhances sport culture by implementing a connected and safe network of cycling paths in a bid to change the lifestyle of people through using healthy mobility means and exercise. Ashghal is now working to set up a network of cycling and pedestrian paths of about 2,650km by 2022.
Also, the development will remarkably improve traffic in the area. Ashghal said traffic on Al Shamal Road and between Al Khafji street and Al Gharrafa street will be remarkably improved while reducing travel time by up to 95% while replacing the existing Duhail Intersection and alleviating traffic congestion in the area by providing free-flowing and efficient traffic movement in all directions. Roads on the surrounding network will simultaneously benefit from the improved traffic flow.
In August 2020, Ashghal opened the Duhail Al Gharrafa Bridge that provides free flow between Al Khafaji Street and Al Gharrafa Street while easing traffic flow between areas of West Bay, Al-Markhiya and Duhail towards Al Gharrafa and Al Rayyan. Also, parts of traffic signals within the project were opened by Ashghal. The bridge consists of a 400m three-lane dual carriageway to accommodate about 12,000 vehicles per hour on both sides.
The QR800mn worth project consists of a three-level interchange including two new bridges and 3.3km of main carriageway. The new bridges will deliver four lanes in each direction providing free-flow connectivity from Al Shamal Road towards Doha and Al Khafji Street towards Al Gharrafa Street. Also, a new signalised junction under Al Shamal Bridge will replace Duhail Roundabout and facilitate the movements that were once possible at Sheikh Faisal Roundabout. As part of the project, a new underpass that will allow road users to exit Al Shamal Road onto the service roads to access the nearby malls is also constructed. The underpass serves as the connection from Al Gharrafa Street towards Al Shamal and Sabah Al Ahmad corridor. Ashghal has also informed that a total of 5.5km of pedestrian and cycle paths will be constructed parallel to the main carriageway along with Duhail and Gharrafa areas and Al Shamal Road.
