* New recycling bins have been installed in high-volume areas - lobbies, reception, cafeterias, staff designated areas or visitors/patient areas
* New waste system enables HMC to monitor how much waste is recycled with tallies being kept for each month

Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) has launched a recycling pilot programme at selected sites in Hamad Bin Khalifa Medical City.
The 'Waste Wise' programme not only encourages staff, patients and visitors to use state-of-the art bins to recycle paper, aluminum, plastic and other waste, but also seeks to change habits and behaviours related to recycling.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), of the total amount of waste generated by healthcare activities globally, about 85% is general, non-hazardous waste, much of which can be recycled.

“In line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and its commitment to environmental sustainability, HMC is working to reduce the general waste we send to landfills in Qatar every year by making some changes,” said Hamad al-Khalifa, HMC’s chief of healthcare facilities and acting chief of Business Services.
“Our goal is to reduce the amount of general waste sent to landfill by our facilities by 10% in 2021 and by 15% by November 2022. As part of meeting this goal, for the first phase of this four-phase programme, we have installed bins in selected areas of HMC. By the start of the World Cup in 2022, patients and visitors can expect to find these innovative bins in all of our facilities.”
The Waste Wise new recycling bins have been installed in high-volume areas - lobbies, reception, cafeterias, staff designated areas or visitors/patient areas. The new waste system enables HMC to monitor how much waste is recycled with tallies being kept for each month.
The pilot programme is coupled with an education campaign informing staff and visitors what can be recycled, how to use the bins and how to be involved. Al-Khalifa said embracing recycling at HMC and the Waste Wise programme is not just the responsibility of staff.
“As we continue to roll out the programme across HMC, we are asking our community to help us reach these waste reduction goals and deposit their waste in the appropriate bins,” he added.
