Al Shoughor opened her scorecard at Wolverhampton on Saturday on just her second start and her first as a three-year-old. In the colours of Al Shaqab Racing, the Richard Fahey-trained filly had debuted as a two-year-old for a fifth place and, on Saturday, put any doubts to rest with this performance.
Eleven runners lined up in the Betway Maiden Stakes, over 1,200m on the all-weather track. Al Shoughor was quickly up to the lead alongside Cosmos Raj. They led through the turn, with Cosmos Raj sitting just on the flanks of Al Shoughor. In the straight, Al Shoughor drifted into the centre of the track, showing some immaturity, but was always doing enough to hold her rivals at bay. She won by 1½ lengths under jockey Tony Hamilton in front of Get Funky, with Cosmos Raj in third.
From the first crop of Al Shaqab Racing sire Shalaa, Al Shoughor is out of the Indian Ridge mare Full Mandate. A sister to top-class sprinter and sire Profitable, Full Mandate also showed plenty of speed herself, winning over 1,200m at two. She is the dam of useful sprinter Dan Troop, who has a rating of 90. Al Shoughor was purchased by Al Shaqab Racing as a foal at the Tattersalls December Sales.
