Qatar has taken part in the 44th virtual annual meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of the Group of 77 and China, represented by HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi. In his speech at the meeting, the minister stated that Qatar has provided aid, totalling more than $89mn, to 78 countries affected by the coronavirus pandemic.
HE al-Muraikhi also said that Qatar has played a pioneering role in supporting international efforts to combat the effects of climate change, with His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani announcing during the Climate Action Summit in September last year that Qatar would contribute $100mn to support small island developing states and least-developed countries.
The minister indicated that the Qatar Fund for Development is currently working on developing a mechanism to respond to the challenges related to climate change in these countries. HE al-Muraikhi said that Qatar will also host the 5th United Nations Conference for the Least Developed Countries from January 23-27, 2022.
He reaffirmed the principle of the permanent sovereignty of peoples over their natural resources that are under foreign occupation, the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and residents of the occupied Golan Heights, and the right to self-determination.
The minister indicated that although respecting the sovereignty of states and not interfering in their internal affairs constitute two basic pillars of the principles of the Group of 77 (G77), this important principle is violated by certain member states of the group.
HE al-Muraikhi referred to the illegal blockade imposed on Qatar more than three years ago, adding that this action is a violation of the rules and principles of the group, and is inconsistent with the goals and objectives of the United Nations and international law.
