The European Union (EU) heads of mission in Qatar have lauded the announcement by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to hold the first Shura Council elections in October 2021. The embassy of Germany, which holds the EU presidency, issued a statement yesterday together with other diplomatic missions of EU member states in Qatar.
“The EU heads of mission in Qatar welcome the announcement by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, of a concrete timeframe to hold the first Shura Council elections in October 2021,” the statement said.
“This important step will increase political participation by Qatari citizens to the benefit of the people of Qatar.”
The EU heads of mission stand ready to share the experiences of their respective countries with the authorities concerned in Qatar if requested, the statement noted. “The EU heads of mission wish HE Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid al-Mahmoud, Speaker of the Shura Council, and council members a productive 49th session.”
Also, President of the Qatari-Italian Parliamentary Friendship Group and Secretary-General of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Parliament Ugo Cappellacci, praised the announcement of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to hold elections for the Shura Council in October next year.
In a statement, the president said that this announcement is a historic step towards the representation of the Council and the necessary participation of citizens in the legislative process, which must be welcomed by the international community.
