The German government yesterday welcomed the announcement of His Highness the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to hold elections for the Shura Council next year.
A German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman described the announcement as an “important step” towards more political participation of citizens in Qatar.
His Highness the Amir announced in his speech during the opening of the 49th ordinary session of the Shura Council on Tuesday that the Council elections will be held in October 2021, in accordance with the Constitution on which a referendum was held in 2003 and was promulgated in 2004.
The Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong, has also praised the announcement of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to hold elections for the Shura Council in October next year.
