The Tunisian embassy in Doha said that the directives of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani to send urgent medical aid to support healthcare institutions in Tunisia in combatting the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) epidemic was thanked and appreciated by Tunisian President Kais Saied, as it reflected the strength of ties between the two peoples.
The embassy praised, in a statement, Qatar’s quick response to a request to establish a field hospital in the city of Qibili equipped with a 100 beds and 20 ventilators.
The embassy added that Qatari solidarity was also reflected in the important financial support provided by Qatari companies in Tunisia, in addition to Qatar Charity’s support of the Tunisian state’s efforts in containing the virus.
The statement said that Qatar, despite its fight against the coronavirus epidemic, proved that it is committed to humanitarian solidarity by providing medical assistance to more than 20 developing and developed countries, in addition to pledging $20mn to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisations, as well as important donations made directly or through regional and international organisations.
The embassy praised Qatar’s transparency in dealing with the coronavirus crisis, noting the measures taken by the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs to ease the negative impacts of Covid-19 on residents to guarantee their health and safety.
It stressed that Qatar has provided all the support at a time when the world is facing the impact of the spread of Covid-19, including the support to Tunisian nationals in Qatar.
The statement highlighted the repatriation of Tunisian citizens from Qatar as examples of that support, noting that Tunisia highly values the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ efforts in repatriating more than 1,500 Tunisians from Qatar, in addition to the repatriation of other Tunisian nationals in countries in Asia and Africa through Doha.
Social support was another example as the Tunisian community benefited from the efforts of Qatar Red Crescent, Qatar Charity and other bodies, particularly during Ramadan, it added.
The embassy thanked Qatar Airways for proving to be a lifeline to more than a million people from different nationalities by helping them get home, in addition to delivering medical aid to various areas across the globe.
