Abdulla al-Qubaisi clinched the Qatar Superstock 600 title after two thrilling races held during the last round at Losail International Circuit.
Defending champion Saeed al-Sulaiti trailed al-Qubaisi by only six points and was fancying his chances, but the latter won both races to thwart his ambition.
The first race saw al-Sulaiti in great form but over the last three laps his bike developed a brake paddle problem allowing al-Qubaisi to win it. Mashel al-Naimi finished second while al-Sulaiti was third.
Al-Qubaisi started the second race only three points ahead and it appeared he had a fight on hand as it was al-Sulaiti who was in front most of the time.
But with just one lap to go, al-Qubaisi found an opening and overtook al-Sulaiti to clinch the title with a total of 213 points. Al-Sulaiti was second with 205 while al-Naimi finished third.
“I am really really happy for the whole season. Everybody was working with me very hard, the mechanics, family, Saeed, my supporter number one.  The whole championship was really hard fighting with Saeed , he is working really hard and strong so it was a very difficult win,”’ said al-Qubaisi.
“In race two I pushed very hard and I didn’t know I was going to win the championship until the last lap. I overtook and created a bit of a gap and won,” he added.
“I also want to thank QMMF President Mr Abdulrahman al-Mannai and LCSC General Manager and Vice President Mr Khalid al-Remaihi for this amazing championship,” al-Qubaisi concluded.
Al-Sulaiti said the problem which he faced with his bike affected his chances.
“Unfortunately, I lost the gear paddle in the middle of the first race and after that I had to play it safe and could only manage third place,” said al-Sulaiti.
“The second race was one of the strongest ones of the championship as there was a tough fight until the last lap when Abdulla made his move. But at the end of the day, Abdulla deserves the championship. We worked really hard and coaching him for the last three years was an honour,” added al-Sulaiti.
“I am very proud of him and I feel like his win is a double win for me. I was waiting for this moment since we started training together.
“I won the last three years and now I lost but this is a motivation to work harder for next season and be back on the top,” he concluded.
French rider Jeremy Parola won the QSTK Trophy with 233 points, while Rayad al-Emadi finished second with 210 points and Hassan al-Mansoori third.
Trophies were presented by QMMF President Abdulrahman al-Mannai and LCSC Vice president Khalid al-Remaihi.
