Education partners ExxonMobil Qatar and Qatar University (QU) will host the eighth Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy in Doha.
The academy, which was established in 2012 with QU’s National Centre for Educator Development and support from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, provides science and math teachers from Qatar’s government schools with an opportunity to learn new and effective teaching strategies and enhance existing skills.
The academy’s purpose is to ensure that teachers have deep knowledge of their discipline by providing them with access to high-quality learning and professional development opportunities. It also helps them inspire students with STEM education so that they have a chance to be the innovators, educators and researchers of their generation.
“Its overall mission is to support national efforts to improve workforce development by building critical skills in the interest of national economic growth. These skills matter fundamentally for Qatar’s economic and sustainable future,” a press statement noted.
More than 50 teachers will take part in this year’s academy.
Around 40 of these teachers are grade 3-6 math and science teachers from Qatar’s government schools, eight are Teach For Qatar (TFQ) fellows, and the remaining are representatives from the Ministry of Education and Higher Education.
All participating teachers have been selected by the ministry, QU and TFQ. “They are determined and passionate individuals who are engaged in their profession and committed to students and their learning,” the statement stressed.
More than 380 teachers from Qatar’s school system would have taken part in the programme by the end of this year’s academy. These teachers are expected to impact more than 18,000 students through their classrooms.
“The Ministry of Education and Higher Education is working hard to give Qatar’s students the chance to develop strengths, interests and goals during their school experience through programmes like the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy,” said Hissa al-Aali, director of Training and Educational Development Centre at the ministry.
“We’re looking forward to co-hosting another edition of the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy with our partner, ExxonMobil Qatar,” said Ahmed al-Emadi, dean of Qatar University’s College of Education.
“With the support of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, the academy has helped hundreds of teachers directly contribute to the human development objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030,” said Alistair Routledge, president and general manager for ExxonMobil Qatar. “
“It is our responsibility as educators and as a community to provide them (young people) with an enabling environment that supports their learning and development. This is what the Qatar University ExxonMobil Teachers Academy is all about,” added Dr Abdullah Abu Tineh, director, National Centre for Educational Development at Qatar University.
