The third consultative meeting between the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) began yesterday with the aim of organising the second Global Judicial Integrity Network conference, to be held in Doha on November 18 and 19 this year.
The international conference, hosted in Doha, focuses on the issue of judicial integrity that Qatar pays particular attention to.
Judicial integrity is also one of the outcomes of the Doha Declaration, implemented by the UNODC with the support of Qatar and contributes to strengthening judicial integrity and preventing corruption in the judicial system.
Qatar’s leadership takes pride in the independence and integrity of the judiciary.
The Doha Declaration was issued at the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, hosted by Qatar in 2015.
In a speech during the consultative meeting, HE the Chairman of the Supreme Judicial Council Dr Hassan Lahdan Saqr al-Mohannadi said that Qatar’s hosting of the second Global Judicial Integrity Network conference reflects its belief in the supreme principles of integrity and judicial independence in order to create a scientific contribution to transform the ambitions of establishing a judicial system entrenched with the principles of justice into a reality.
In this context, he stressed the importance of ensuring duties are accompanied by rights, pointing out that judicial immunity supports the judge in promoting the ethics of his profession and to ensure professionalism, and to provide an environment of reassurance that laws won’t be used in an unjust manner.
He stressed that all these elements combined lead to a satisfactory level of judicial integrity in line with the global standards for the term.
He added that the judicial immunity is a guarantee to maintain a judge’s integrity, especially in light of recent developments that saw International Criminal Court judges face threats and allegations from some states.
Meanwhile, HE al-Mohannadi met with senior programme officer of the UNODC, Marco Teixeira and his accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, they discussed plans between the Supreme Judiciary Council and UNODC for the second Meeting of the Global Judicial Integrity Network to be held in Doha.
They also discussed unifying the visions towards the future partnership between both parties and possible joint opportunities for the sustainability of the Global Judicial Integrity Network initiative.
