Doha Centre for Media Freedom (DCMF) has concluded a training course, ‘Safety of Journalists in Conflict Areas, recently in Istanbul, Turkey.
The course was organised by DCMF in collaboration with Qatar Red Crescent and Al Jazeera Media Institute.
The course was moderated by Mahmoud al-Ken, reporter and producer at Al Jazeera. The course mainly focused on raising the awareness of journalists around their safety during media coverage in areas of conflict, in addition to providing them with the skills that help them deal with the risks they may face during
their work.
Twenty journalists participated in the training course, mainly from countries that suffer from conflicts and crises. The participants received various presentations and lectures on the risks that many journalists face in conflict areas, also how to assess the risk in the field and ensure self-protection by following the safety guidelines.
During the closing ceremony, a number of participants gave positive feedback on the course.
Ayman Jad, news anchor and presenter with Watan TV, praised the efforts of DCMF in training journalists on how to deal with the risks they face while they are covering areas of conflict.
He said this course has a great impact on developing skills of journalists by providing them with the necessary guidelines to insure their safety.
At the end of the course, the participants were given their certificates in addition to first-aid kits, which were provided by Qatar Red Crescent, to enhance their safety during press coverage in conflict areas.
The course was part of DCMF’s training plan, which focuses its efforts on training journalists working in conflict areas on how to maintain their safety during press coverage.
