UCL Qatar has announced that its Library and Information Studies and Museums and Gallery Practice master degree students will be completing their work placements at prestigious local and international museums, art galleries and libraries.
These include the Qatar National Library, Hammonds House Museum in Atlanta, US, Ho?ek Contemporary in Berlin, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and more.
The work placement is a mandatory educational requirement for all students enrolled in both graduate programmes. Students seeking first-hand experiences that fit their academic interests are encouraged to take advantage of the various opportunities made available in both the world’s and Qatar’s rapidly expanding heritage sectors.
“Through a combination of class-based theory and hands-on experience during work placements, we are committed to equip our students with the knowledge and expertise needed to become future leaders in Qatar’s growing cultural heritage sectors,” said Sam Evans, the director of UCL Qatar.
“Our requirement to complete a professional work placement enables our students to apply the theory and skills they have learned in class to a professional environment. Through these experiences, our students learn valuable lessons that will help them find challenging jobs at the forefront of this demanding industry.”
The Museums and Gallery Practice student placements are currently taking place at top global cultural organisations where students are given the opportunity to be directly involved in projects and collaborate with museum professionals in various departments, such as curation, exhibitions, and education.
Selected examples of UCL Qatar’s placement collaborations for 2017-2018 are the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, the State Hermitage Museum in Russia, Unesco Regional office in Doha, and the National Museum of Qatar.
Students from the Library and Information Studies programme have completed their placements at prestigious libraries around the world. These include the Lauinger Library at Georgetown University in Washington DC, the OPEC Information Centre in Vienna, The British Library, and the Museum of Islamic Art Library in Doha.
Joining such prestigious libraries, the students have the opportunity to contribute to real life scenarios in various departments such as cataloguing or archiving, acquiring this way first-hand experience needed to succeed in a professional setting.
UCL Qatar’s ongoing efforts and goals are to create a lasting legacy of world-leading research and teaching excellence to enrich and support the university’s students, as well as delivering the aspirations of Qatar’s National Vision, regionally and internationally.
