Eminent Qatari and Indian sport personalities and organisations were honoured by the Indian Sports Centre (ISC), which functions under the Indian embassy.
The Excellence in Sports Management Award 2018 was conferred on Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) secretary general Hassan al-Thawadi, due to his leadership in preparing Qatar for FIFA 2022.
SC Sports and Culture head Ali al-Mahmoud accepted the award on behalf of al-Thawadi from Indian ambassador P Kumaran.
The Sports Excellence Award 2018 was conferred on Nada Zeidan due to her numerous international achievements in archery, especially for winning the Qatar National Archery Championship 2006 and for being the first woman rally driver from the GCC countries to compete in the World Rally championship.
The Sports Excellence Award 2018 in Volleyball went to Mubarak Eid, board member of the Qatar Volleyball Association and former captain of the Qatar national team.
Mohammed Abdul Wahab, a promising table tennis player who represented Qatar and was crowned as Under-19 Arab Champion in 2017, received the Sports Excellence Award 2018 in Table Tennis.
MES Indian School received the Best Sports Organisation of the Year award 2018 for their notable achievements in 2017, being the second runner-up in the Indian Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) National Football Championship, being the overall champion in the CBSE National Athletic Meet, and attaining the Best School Award under the School Olympic Programme.
The Sports Excellence Award 2018 in the Men’s Category was awarded to Deon Britto for his achievements in cricket as captain of Qatar National Team under 13, 15, 17, and to Abdul Nasser P for setting the new benchmarks in Qatar for participating in the Paris and Kuwait Marathon events, the Ironman 70.3 Colombo 2018, and reaching the Mount Everest base camp.
Misnad Kottarathil Muneer of MES Indian School received the Sports Excellence Award 2018 in the Boys’ Category for his achievements in athletics (School Olympic, CBSE Clusters, CBSE National and IAAF Diamond League).
The Sports Excellence Award 2018 in the Girls’ Category went to Aditri Vikrant Patil of American School Doha for achievements in under-14 School Olympics, the Thailand Fencing championship, being the National Fencing champion, and being the India sub-Junior Fencing champion.
The Partnership Appreciation Award 2018 was given to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC), the Qatar Football Association, the Qatar Cricket Association, the Qatar Volleyball Association, the Qatar Table Tennis Association, the Qatar Swimming Association, and the Qatar Athletics Federation.
ISC president Nilangshu Dey welcomed the audience.
The SC’s al-Mahmoud thanked the Indian community for its support in all their community engagement endeavours.
The programme brochure was released by the Indian ambassador.
