The State of Qatar has underlined that building sustainable peace is a fundamental pillar of its policy. Qatar stressed the importance of mediation as a key tool for preventing and resolving conflicts by peaceful means, as it contributed to the resolution of many conflicts and in co-ordination with the United Nations.
This came in a statement delivered by HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad al-Muraikhi yesterday at the UN high-level Meeting on Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace.
The minister expressed his belief that achievement of peace would be beneficial for all, pointing out that belonging to a region that unfortunately is full of crises and conflicts, and having paid dearly for the absence of peace, makes us realise the importance of achieving it. Al-Muraikhi added that Qatar’s vision is a comprehensive one that places at the top of its priorities systemic prevention, peaceful conflict resolution and supporting institutions capable of achieving peace.
The minister said that education is a key tool for peace-building, noting that Qatar had made huge contributions to education in many parts of the world, especially in conflict zones, and had committed itself to educating 10mn children worldwide, and the economic empowerment of half-million young men and women in the Middle East.
He also noted Qatar’s co-operation with the United Nations to build capacities and protect young people from the scourge of extremism that leads to terrorism.
Al-Muraikhi also pointed to Qatar’s focus on mediation as a key tool for preventing and resolving disputes by peaceful means, which contributed to solving many conflicts in co-ordination with the United Nations.
He noted that Qatar has come a long way towards establishing peace, noting the great achievements of Qatar to protect the rights and dignity of all who live on its land and achieve their aspirations for a decent life, and where it achieved the highest level of human development according to global indicators.
The minister added that experiences have confirmed that crises and conflicts are the result of the absence of the rule of law, lack of respect for international law, violation of sovereignty and choices of states, lack of social justice, corruption and marginalisation.
Elaborating, he said that achievement of peace requires abandoning the policies of threat and violation of states’ sovereignty and the activation of crises to achieve illegal objectives, calling on the international community to put an end to such policies, especially in the Middle East, which is facing increasing crises and conflicts.
He stressed that peace can be achieved only through co-operation between all and the commitment to international law.
In support of the efforts of the United Nations to build peace, the minister noted Qatar’s hosting of regional consultations on the sustainability of peace held in Doha last January, in the presence of the President of the General Assembly, the participation of states, United Nations organs and regional and non-governmental organisations.
He stressed that the results of those consultations have confirmed that the best way to achieve sustainable peace is to address the root causes of conflicts.
At the end of the statement, al-Muraikhi, reiterated the support of Qatar for the efforts and initiatives of the United Nations Secretary-General in the area of preventive diplomacy aimed at achieving peace.
