Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim celebrates the victory in Club Cup astride MJ Lattam yesterday.


Hadi Nasser al-Ramzani and Jassim Mohamed Ghazali’s wards topped three races each on the penultimate day of this season’s racing at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC), with the former notching the six-furlong sprint feature on dirt with MJ Lattam yesterday.
In the Club Cup (The Late Saeed Bin Ahmed Al Kuwari Cup), yesterday’s feature for Purebred Arabians, Qatari jockey Faleh Bughanaim rode his 19th winner of the season when Mohanad Jassim al-Yaqout’s MJ Lattam beat Ghazali-trained Rassan and Hassan al-Matwi’s Raqee for the second straight outing for a memorable win.
Al-Ramzani, whose first winner of the day was Tomas Lukasek-ridden Random Decision in the six-furlong Thoroughbred Novice Plate event, won the penultimate race of the day with Al Jeryan Stud’s AJS Al Rayyan edging out another Ghazali ward, Carab, by a short head for the 1700m Purebred Arabian Conditions event.
Champion Trainer Ghazali’s wards snapped up two straight conditions races for Thoroughbreds with Injaaz Stud’s Izzthatright topping the six-furlong Class 2 race, and Khalifa bin Sheail al-Kuwari’s Opera Baron taking the 1,900m event.
Izzthatright continued his impressive run as Marc Lerner helmed the gelding to his sixth win out of seven runs this season, with the six-year-old’s only loss being a close runner-up spot in the Dukhan Sprint behind British raider Intisaab during the Emir’s Sword Racing Festival weekend in February.
Five lengths behind him, Ibrahim al-Malki’s Shobrom, helmed by Tadgh O’Shea, edged out another Injaaz Stud sprinter My Sharona by head for the second spot.
In the 1,900m race, Opera Baron, JP Guillambert’s second winner of the card, bounced back from a disappointing finish last time round earlier this month to pick up his third victory this season. Tomas Lukasek-ridden Karraar and Saleem Golam-helmed Jewel House completed the top three.
While he came close on many occasions during the course of this season, a victory had always eluded Mohamed Hussain Afroz’s ward, Succeed and Excel. That changed yesterday, as the gelding registered his first win since January last year.
In the 2,000m Thoroughbred Handicap event on dirt, the seven-year-old found his stride and along with Jean Baptiste Hamel in the saddle, raced to a fine four-length victory. Dhafi Rashid al-Marri’s horse beat Ghazali’s in-form ward Sacred Way, ridden by Lerner in the colours of Shaheen bin Khalid Shaheen al-Ghanim, for the win.
Earlier in the day, Ghazali-schooled Munaawashat led a one-two for the trainer to shed her maiden status under Guillambert, while Qatari rider Ali Khalid al-Mosallam registered his third victory this season astride Bader al-Balushi-trained Fazan, who to picked up his first career victory.
Among the Thoroughbreds, al-Malki’s ward, Mister Mahjoob, was ridden to the colt’s first career win by Golam.
